Practice What You Preach

My Grandfather's Wisdom in Riddles

#PracticeWhatYouPreach

As I was growing up on the farm, my grandfather often said these one-liners that I still remember.  Some of my grandfather's statements:

Walk one foot in front of the other, so you walk straight on your path.

Actions speak louder than words, what story are you telling?

When people look at your life, let your actions and wolds mean the same thing.

Say what you mean and mean what you say.
Say what you do and do what you say.

The one that I remember the most is: Practice what you preach.

My grandfather often spoke in riddles, I did not understand "practice what you preach." I am a female and raised Southern Baptist. What did he mean by practicing preaching?  In the '70s, women didn't preach.   Do I preach to the farm animals?  I was so confused.

One day I overheard some adults talking about a man disappearing. The ladies of the church were taking some food to the lady and school/church clothes for the children.

When I asked my grandfather what happened to the man? How did he just disappear? Did aliens get him?  My grandfather said the man did not practice what he preached.  Now I am baffled.  He was not a preacher.  What did preaching have anything to do with disappearing?   I asked one more time ... what does it mean to "practice what you preach?"  He said our neighbor said he loved his wife and family, but he hurt them by having another family with a secret woman.  What he said did not match his actions.

So practice what you preach, also means let your actions and words mean the same thing.  Before you do anything, ask yourself, is this the sermon you want to preach?  Before you say anything, ask yourself, is this the sermon you want to preach?

David and Goliath Bible Story

#BibleStory
#David-Goliath

When my son was ten-year-old, he acted out his perspective of the Bible Story: David and Goliath.
It was time for a Bible story. My son volunteered to tell the story as a one-person show.

Levi stood up, I choose David, a young boy around 14-years-old.

(He stand up on the couch in a deep voice.)
Goliath: Do you have a warrior? Do you have just one person who will stand up to me?
(He laughed into his hands and made the laugh echo.)

(Then he would jump down on his knees in a mousey voice.)
Israel men:  We are afraid. Goliath will kill us.

(He runs to his room and gets his slingshot with no rocks. He walked into the room Singing Jesus loves me. He walked over to us. Standing tall.)
David: Who is that on the mountain?

(He jumped down on his knees in a mousey voice.)
David's Brother: David get down.  Goliath and he is going to kill us. We are afraid.

(He stood up and got up on the coffee table.)
David: I will fight you in the name of Israel’s God.

(He got up on the couch.)
Goliath: You are a child. I will feed you to the birds. HA-HA,
(He opened up his arms in laughter.)

(He got on the coffee table. Goliath laughs, and David swings.)
David: Goliath and all the Philistine warriors will die today. I will sling this stone in the name of Israel’s God.
(David hits Goliath. Goliath is dead.)

(My son gets on the couch and stands on Goliath - a pillow and with a hand over eyes.)
David: I am looking, but all of the Philistines are running away.
(David was the hero and he praised God.)

Sunday Morning in Sunday School:
After the lesson, a question was asked: “Why did David get 5 stones”?
My son responded 1 for Goliath and 4 for the other generals, and the other Israel warriors will get the rest.
That morning I did not say anything at church, but it made me think. When we got home, I asked him about his answer. My sons answered ... 1 stone per person per town, you know leaders.
My son said more truth than I realized. In an Adult Bible study, I found it. There were 5 Philistine warriors named in a Bible Study - Goliath, Ishbibi-Benob, Lahmi, Saph, and Gath - the Giant with 6 fingers each hand and 6 toes each foot. (2 Samuel 21) My son remembered and I did not.  Out of the mouths of babes.

David was a 14-year-old boy and Goliath was a grown man and a giant,  As with the lion and bear, David know God's protection.

KINDNESS to US

#KINDNESS

As I grew up, The adults would say ... Be careful .... you will reap what you sow.

As an adult, I know that the comment is a loose translation of Galatians 6:7-9, but the adults made their point.

This is an excellent example of #KINDNESS.

We were at a local store and we were a couple of pennies short.  So we were trying to find some pennies, nickel, dime or something so we would not have to break a dollar.  At first, we thought it was 1 penny.  a lady in front of us handed us a penny.  The lady stood there with us as the cashier counted slowly.  The lady said just in case you need another as we laughed.  Then the cashier said oh I am sorry, but we needed 1 more penny.  The lady smiled and gave us another penny.   That is being KIND.

For years I have been asking for people to nice and kind when you have the opportunity.  This lady did.  Thank you for your 2 pennies.

Galatians 6:7-9  - NKJV
Verse 7  Be not deceived, God is not mocked: for whatever a sows, that he will also reap.
Verse 8  For he who sows to his flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.
Verse 9  And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we reap if we do not lose heart.

KINDNESS to OTHERS

#ShowKindness

Let us be KIND.

December is the month to look back.
January is the month to look forward.
We plan for a better year.

One of the things we can do is to be KIND.

What does Being KIND mean?
     Showing friendly, generous, considerate nature
     Polite Request
     Affectionate and loving

(Defined on BING.com)

There was a movie a few years ago about "Kindness".  The movie starts off with two people bumping into one another.  Things are dropped.  The guy stopped and helped to pick everything up.  The guy who was helped then assisted someone.  etc. At the end the person who show kindness first, he was shown kindness.

I an not saying to be kind to get kindness, but Just Be Kind: Open a door, pick something up, pay for someone's lunch.

There was another movie about a deaf girl.  People made fun of her, but one person cared and became her friend.

Sometimes Being Kind will not be popular, but you can happy.

Ephesians 4:32
Be KIND to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Christmas Love Story

#ChristmasLoveStory
#AdultBibleStudy
This an Adult Bible Study Lesson.

As a child, I heard Bible Stories at Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.  The story of the Wall of Jericho came tumbling down. Boaz loved Ruth and they lived happily ever after.  Mary had Jesus.

I noticed 2 women in the genealogy of Jesus.  I often wondered why these 2 and why not the others.  After all, it takes two to give birth to a child.  It did not mean that much to me to hear this man begot this man, etc, until this year.   As I was listening, I discovered the Christmas Story in a different way.

Book of Matthew Chapter 1 - Genealogy of Jesus.
Verse 5:     Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse,
Verse 6:     and Jesse begot David the king.
Verse 16: And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.

In other words, Salmon and Rahab's son was Boaz, Boaz and Ruth's son was Obed, ... Jacob's son was Joseph.  Joseph and Mary were engaged when Mary was having Jesus by the Holy Spirit.  Joseph married Mary and accepted Jesus as his son.

I had heard these verses so many times before, but why were Rahab and Ruth important because they were not Israelites.  I had often wondered why Boaz accepted and loved Ruth.  The answer was Boaz's father and mother.  His mother was Rahab for Jericho - the Canaanite harlot who told a lie to her people to save the Israelite spies.  Salmon redeemed, loved, and married Rehab.  They had Boaz.  Rahab loved her son so much that Boaz understood how to love Ruth - a Moab widow.

Joseph had heard the stories of the redemptive love between Salmon and Rahab and how Boaz redeemed Ruth.  When the angel asked Joseph to Redeem and Love marry Mary, Joseph understood what was asked of him to do.

The redemptive loved Salmon gave to Rahab and the redemptive love Boaz gave to Ruth and the redemptive love Joseph gave to Mary is extraordinary.  The redeeming accepting love Joseph gave to Mary and Jesus.  Jesus gives this same redemptive love freely to everyone.

Life in 2019

 #LifeIn2019

Life is Hard.  Life was never meant to be easy.  When you look back, learn from your past.
Some year are just harder than others: like death, divorce, sickness, Hurricane.
Some year are just better than others: like births, marriages, healthy, nice job.
Most years have both.

A Flash Back of 2019:

Travel:  North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri.

Places:  Mountains to Flat Lands, Lakes & Rivers to Ocean, and a lot in between.

Weather: Rain, Wind, Snow, Ice, Flooding, and the results of a Hurricane and Tornado

My favorite thing is Talking to People: From all walks of life from Candia to Florida, From California to North Carolina.
As travelers meet travelers at a #ChoiceHotel we talk about all the wonderous places and things to see and do.  Most #ChoiceHotels have a Free Booklet about the area.  I try to see and do at lease 1 thing..

Happy New Year 2020

#HappyNewYear2020

Let us use the meaning of "2020" to look at our past to make a better future.

Let us evaluate the past to build on the good and learn from the not so good.

Let us look to the future and decide to make your life better.

Let us look to the future and decide to stop doing the things that hurts your life.

I am working on finding way to deal with the things I can not change.

I am working on treating people with kindness.

I am working on meeting people where they are and helping them move forward.

I am working on helping people find their talents and using the talents for good.
